JetBlue losin' some Soul?
Can’t really put my finger on it, but My recent experiences with Jetblue have been, well….mediocre. From the condition of the plane to the energy coming from the staff. Just feeling stale and flat. Might be b/c I’ve been flying Virgin more lately (who I think is making the rest of the airline industry look like JV hacks), but I’ve always been a huge fan of Jetblue. ...

Boston vs SF? Find the Rock Stars
A couple of weeks ago, Scott Kirsner from the Globe (someone I really like) tossed some fuel on the fire of the Boston vs San Francisco start-up scene debate with this article. I thought I’d add my thoughts given that we at TRAACKR are only a few months away from relocating our start-up from Cambridge to SF.
Yes, yes. We’re selling out. And I’ll write more about that...

Don’t worry about money right now. You can always get a job that pays you plenty of money. Don’t worry about your resume. Don’t worry about “am I positioning myself the right way for something five years from now.” I know way too many 45 year olds who have plenty of money, have done all the right career things, yet are unhappy with where they are in life, where they live, and...

Google +1. Search going social? Will it work?
When I first read about Google +1, I was very high on the idea. At least at a conceptual level. It’s Search going Social. Cool stuff. I see “Social” as a major web ‘force’ and I love to see web forces colliding (Social + eCommerce = Groupon et all; Social + Photos = Flickr, Instagram; etc). So a major collision between Search & Social is interesting and...

Having Soul vs Being Soulful...
Like most of this Tumble blog, this is just a thought I’m working on…not sure I have perfect clarity on it, but I’m getting there.
I think there is a difference between Having Soul and Being Soulful. But that both are essential to the early days (and beyond) of any business.
My thought is that a person that has Soul is someone who is incredibly driven by one single, or a...

Timing - when a quarter is worth $39.99
I fucking hate parking tickets. I get way too many and they drive me nuts. A few weeks ago, I was parked at a meter, needed more time, but didn’t have any quarters. At the same time, the parking…ticket…person (I suppose it’s not cool to call them meter maids anymore) was a few cars down writing out a ticket. I was pretty much next in line for a ticket. The tickets for...

Soul building in a group - it doesn't work. Keep...
I believe in collaboration. I believe in crowdsourcing. I believe that good ideas can come out of group discussions and brainstorming.
But I don’t believe that the Soul of a business can be created, designed or developed as a group exercise.
I am speaking partly out of experience on this one. I recently tried to develop a new application/business and the early brainstorming came in...

Howard Shultz certainly buys into the idea of...
I was psyched to see this feature in the NYT on Howard Shultz and his comeback to Starbucks. I was psyched because I have always looked to Starbucks as one of the most ‘soulful’ companies ever. By ‘soulful’ I mean a company whose activities and growth was defined, driven & fueled by an incredibly strong Soul. I always believed that Starbucks lost its Soul when...

Tim O'Reily talks about the "Core" of O'Reily...
Saw @timoreily speak yesterday at SXSWi. First of all, I find Tim inspiring in almost every sentence he speaks, so it’s always a treat to hear him speak - especially informally.
He said many cool things in this session, but what I loved most about this particular session is hearing Tim talk about the history of O’Reily & the early days…one story stuck out for me.
Tim told the story of how...
